glory-hunting in sports

Spurs_logo sports fans usually rally behind the champions — it’s fernando alonzo rather than kimi raikonnen; manchester united, arsenal and liverpool rather than some bottom-table clubs. i, too, was guilty of glory-hunting. if the lakers were not in the 1984 NBA finals against the boston celtics, i wouldn’t have bought those earvin johnson’s biographies almost eight years later, in 1992 pe-Barcelona Olympics. and after more than two decades, it still pains me everytime the lakers have a bad season.     in some cases, i just got lucky, it wasn’t apparent after the 1990 US Open that pete sampras would collect 13 more major titles, minus the French of course, but you win some, you lose some. though it took sampras almost three years to follow his first US open, his serve and volley could have easily wilted in the heat of the agassi commercial appeal. tiger woods, in serendipity, has done well, after i got glued on his attempt for a third straight US amateur title in mid-1996.      sometimes loyalties are based on one’s own hometown teams or cheering for your country with full force and impunity during football’s world cup.  for the neutrals who are just beginning to embrace sports, most people go for the michael jordans and in recent developments, his heir apparents.  a classmate became a jordan fan after the 1993 NBA final.  i’ve read that others prefer the dishevelled look; the long-haired andre agassi, goran ivanisevic, johnny damon et al. one broadsheet editorial bludgeoned sampras’ serve to death after beating agassi in the ‘95 US open, the writer could have been an agassi fan.

everybody has a type. the classic sample based on country affiliation is tim henman  or andy murray during wimbledon. oh, if only federer is british.  all would be well in the uk mainland. but the ryder cup always give the brits a rush whenever the yanks play like individuals, losing badly before the third day even commences.  would this year be any different?  Tiger

as sampras is already cocooned in marital bliss with his miss teen usa 1990 and their kids, i only have tiger to root for. it’s not going to be easy as he is still grieving from the death of his father. conquering the likes of vijay singh and the people’s champion phil mickelson would be an emotional grind.

and those who didn’t like sampras then are now in the federer camp, making sure that the hairiest man in tennis would be eclipsed in his lofty position.  by reaching the french open finals and winning tons of clay court titles, federer has already overshadowed pistol pete.  (photos from encarta, golfday magazine and the bbc website)

juicy thingamajigs

i aspire for lofty subtleties

sans traumatic temper tantrums

and skewered mood pendulums

vast visions has gone askew

in the dimension of the obsequious

and pious

the sixth sense emanates from the guffaws

of effulgence

breathing iniquitous air in an atmosphere

of intriguing innocence

spur of the moment indulgences

mask the jocosities of laxuries

stranded in the strains of blurry

uncertainties, plewds flowing freely,

softly, naturally.  curmudgeons

flummoxed mankind

within the halos of muddled souls

and overwhelming devotion to self

where do we go from here when

the lofty subtleties of existence

recondite beneath the sphere of

water color washes?

the inchoate of spurls clobbers

the kindred nature of whispered

patience, whispered patience of

final frontiers and

uncluttered images unleashing

pure virtues

rachel on the big screen

Friends_with_money_poster i saw friends with money last week, just aching to see jennifer aniston on any screen. i’ve established a decade watching friends that the actress playing rachel is the more lovable one. i was on team aniston before the phrase was fashionable. although it would be a welcome respite if she could reach the heights of the other actresses in the nicole holofcener latest — all of them are oscar nominees with france mcdormand nabbing a best actress trophy for fargo. there’s the tabloid career worth all its cash in publicity, stemming from a marriage that may have some pulsating meanings and longings but was nothing more than good copy.

friends with money resonates back to the jen aniston’s performance in the good girl, it’s so subtle and depressing that you can feel the character’s pain. but unlike miguel arteta’s picture, this one is more watchable.  the new yorker was quite harsh in it’s review of her acting, olivia, the maid character, was not dead at the center and the lower lip motion was barely visible on the celluloid. david denby might be just anti-aniston, forever biased by the fact that she was ditzy, spoiled rachel in friends and wouldn’t be able transform herself into something much deeper other than being the trophy display in romantic comedies.  Friends_with_money_2

but despite the negativity of the new yorker, the rolling stone review bestows droplets of hope. and all is well in the world of team aniston. she may not halt herself in puffing away her merit fags or become the next mia farrow, but she gives me something to root for. that sometimes despite the money and the glorious facade, people will still call you plain and tear you to pieces in bad english. we await her next project, post The Break Up (photos from the Friends with Money publicity stills).

world cup in england’s pubs

i will certainly celebrate my birthday glued to the england vs sweden match, an acid test for sven’s men prior to the second round.  gone are the days when i was such a blatant glory hunter and cheer for the country that gave us giselle bundchen ( she has made $150 million parading her booties).  now it’s better for the mood of the better half if his country goes all the way.  i’m more realistic but some people live in dreamland.  i mean, greece won euro 2004 and did not even qualify for this year’s ginormous tournament.  this is tough, tough competition.  czech republic swallowed the US team whole. but the yanks aren’t that interested in football. they’re interested in baseball and basketball but their performances in major competitons in both those ballgames were huge failures.  the germans, the italians, certainly the english, with football flowing in their very bloodstream will advance. i don’t want to see england against germany earlier in the tournament. so much bad blood.  even england and argentina would be contentuous.  brazil, with the easy draw, almost have a perfect team. ronaldinho is so magical to watch. ronaldo is fat and his latest paramour is again drop-dead gorgeous supermodel.  and then i saw city of god and it made me sad. a country just like mine towering above all others in the biggest of sports. but i wouldn’t deny england their parade.  in some lives, that’s all that matters.
